Meyer-Optik Trioplan adapted for digital

On Friday, I decided to take the Trioplan from an old Pentacon Pentona that I planned to bin and see if I could use it for digital.

Briefly, I fit it to an M-mount lens adapter and made a few modifications with a Dremel.

I was very happy with the results.

Nice job! And, yes, that out-of-focus stuff is lovely on this lens.

Nice project. It is refreshing to find that digital cameras may have a purpose in life.

At the rate companies keep dropping film types, we may all have to resort to this sooner than later.

I have two Meyer-Optik lenses, a 100mm and a 250mm with Exakta mounts. I bought an adapter to fit them on a Canon EF mount. I haven't taken them out for any real shooting yet. But, just from my front door they do well.

Nice job, Mike. How about showing us something a bit more colourful, if you can?

Last year, I took it up to New York City, attached to the Sony A7 II. It was a very dreary day and rained most of the time that I was out.

I'm still pondering putting it back on the work bench and using the Dremel to remove the square corners.

Wide open, it's sharp in the middle but shows a lot of Tessar-like roundness to the out-of-focus areas. Stopped down, it's reasonably sharp across the frame, once you get to f/8 or f/11. You can see how this lens tends to vignette wide open.

It is not a perfect lens, which is what makes it so interesting.

Very interesting, thanks Mike. The bokeh seems to be very smooth. Colour rendition is also good.

Rounded, but not swirly. Good.
