One of the more interesting announcements this fall is the Zeiss ZX1 – a fixed-lens camera.

Historically, Zeiss has been a manufacturer of camera lenses but not a manufacturer of cameras. From 1929 through the early 1970s, one of its units, Zeiss Ikon, made cameras, but Zeiss itself has not been involved in camera manufacture.

Even the Zeiss Ikon rangefinder that was produced in the late 2000s was manufactured by its partner, Cosina of Japan.

Zeiss gives its Milvus 35mm lens a dose of extra speed

Even as many lens makers are shifting their efforts to more exotic lenses, along comes Zeiss with a 35mm lens.

In this day, a 35mm wide-angle lens is often met with a collective ho-hum. Does photography need another 35mm lens? Does Zeiss need another 35mm lens when it already has a Milvus f/2.0 in that focal length?

New mounts add convenience for iPhone users of Zeiss ExoLens PRO optics

ExoLens PRO mounts

If you own one of the Zeiss ExoLens PRO products for Apple’s iPhone, one of the keys is convenience.

A shortcoming of the original ExoLens Bracket is that it isn’t something that most iPhone owners would want to keep attached all of the time, because it’s a bit ungainly and not compatible with aftermarket cases.

Zeiss Batis 135mm

Zeiss has added its fourth lens for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras.

The Zeiss Batis 135mm is a medium telephoto lens that can be used in many situations, including travel and portrait photography.

Its maximum aperture is f/2.8, which might seem slow in an era of f/1.4 lenses, but Zeiss has never shown an interest in ultra high-speed lenses.

While it’s intended for full-frame cameras, it also can be used with Sony’s APS-C E-mount bodies, where it becomes a 203mm lens.

Photokina 2016

As Photokina 2016 winds down in Cologne, Germany, it was another annual show that attracted thousands to see the latest photographic products.

There were some new bodies, plenty of lenses and a surprise from Fujifilm.

Here’s a quick rundown of the major announcements.

Canon defied the critics and released the EOS M5, its latest mirrorless camera that has an integrated electronic viewfinder and a new 18-150mm kit lens.

What's been missing from Zeiss’ Loxia line of manual-focus lenses for the Sony E-mount is a portrait lens.

It's missing no more, as Zeiss has filled that vacancy with a f/2.4 85mm lens.

While the lens is intended for the Sony full-frame A7 cameras, it also can be used on models with an APS-C sensor, where it becomes a 127.5mm full-frame equivalent.

Zeiss has released more information about its branded accessory lenses for iPhone 6 models.

In January 2016, Zeiss announced that it was collaborating with computer peripheral maker Fellowes to produce add-on lenses for the iPhone. The first product from that partnership was a 0.6x Mutar wide angle. The two accessory lenses announced last week are a 2x Mutar telephoto and a Vario-Proxar close-up lens.

Nerw Zeiss Milvus lenses

Carl Zeiss is one of the oldest names in photography, producing high-quality lenses for more than a century.

In the past decade, Zeiss has made the transition into digital photography and now has expanded its Milvus line of lenses for full-frame Canon and Nikon digital SLRs.

The new lenses include two ultrawide-angle lenses – f/2.8 15mm, f/2.8 18mm – and a f/2.0 135mm telephoto.

Sony now has a premium Zeiss 50mm lens for full-frame E-mount cameras

Zeiss f/1.4 50mm Planar for Sony E-mount

If there’s been one thing missing from Sony’s E-mount lineup, it’s a premium 50mm lens for its full-frame A7 models.

The vacancy has now been filled with the Zeiss FE f/1.4 50mm ZA lens – an autofocus optic.

The Planar has been Zeiss’ standard lens for 35mm and medium-format systems since the 1950s and has served as the basis for the standard lens for nearly all other camera makers.
