Nikon is celebrating 100 years in existence with special photographic and optical products, as well as a limited line of collectible items.

Nikon has set up a microsite at http://www.nikon.com/100th/, which contains a timeline, some videos and more information about its 100th anniversary products.

Nikon might go 'all in' on mirrorless systems. It's about time.

Nikon's 100th anniversary

As Nikon celebrates its 100th anniverary in 2017, the company reportedly is going to get serious about mirrorless cameras, according to Yahoo Japan. It includes the possibility of developing multiple mirrorless cameras.

For photography enthusiasts, there are two reactions (and one of them isn’t, “Ho, hum.”).

  • Why would Nikon do that?
  • What took so long?

Nikon has canceled its long-delayed line of DL premium compact cameras, before they ever arrived on the market.

Nikon cited several things in killing off the three cameras, the DL18-50, DL24-85 and DL24-500 .

Nikon said there were “issues” with the image processing electronics, which caused the cameras to be delayed.

The annual CES show in Las Vegas from Jan. 9-12 always has plenty of product announcements, because that’s the purpose of the show, which used to be called the Consumer Electronics Show.

Companies involved in digital photography also announce new products, and this year, Panasonic was the busiest. Here is a look at the major announcements.

CANON

Nikon is bringing the D5600 to the U.S.

Announced for overseas markets in November, Nikon's mid-level D5600 DSLR will now be available to photographers in the U.S. and Canada.

This camera replaces the D5500. It uses a 24.2-MP DX (APS-C) CMOS sensor paired with a 39-point autofocus system.

The camera has an ISO range of 100-25,600 and records its RAW and JPG images, as well as video, to SD cards.

Speaking of video, the D5600 records Full HD 1920 x 1080 at up to 60 frames per second resolution.

Update: Nikon announced on Jan. 4, 2017, at the CES 2017 show that the D5600 will be available in the U.S. and Canada.

Nikon’s latest mid-range DSLR, the D5600, is an incremental improvement over the D5500.

At this moment, it’s not clear if this model will be available in the U.S. or Canada, as it’s not listed on the product offerings of either the Nikon USA or Nikon Canada sites.

New Nikkor PC 19mm and 70-200mm zoom arrive for full-frame bodies

Nikon has added two pro-level lenses that will cater to two different types of photography.

The AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR and PC 19mm f/4E ED are intended for Nikon’s full-frame FX cameras, although they also can be used with the company’s APS-C bodies. Both are Nikkor lenses, which signify that they are made to stand up to the physical demands of professional photographers.

Both lenses are priced accordingly and are expected to be available in November 2016.

As Photokina 2016 winds down in Cologne, Germany, it was another annual show that attracted thousands to see the latest photographic products.

There were some new bodies, plenty of lenses and a surprise from Fujifilm.

Here’s a quick rundown of the major announcements.

CANON

Canon defied the critics and released the EOS M5, its latest mirrorless camera that has an integrated electronic viewfinder and a new 18-150mm kit lens.
