Nikon might go 'all in' on mirrorless systems. It's about time.

Nikon's 100th anniversary

As Nikon celebrates its 100th anniverary in 2017, the company reportedly is going to get serious about mirrorless cameras, according to Yahoo Japan. It includes the possibility of developing multiple mirrorless cameras.

For photography enthusiasts, there are two reactions (and one of them isn’t, “Ho, hum.”).

  • Why would Nikon do that?
  • What took so long?

I am in the second group.

Panasonic created a very solid camera with the Lumix DMC-G7, and in announcing the G85 successor, it didn’t try to recreate the wheel.

The improvements in the Lumix DMC-G85 are noteworthy and improve the usability in several important areas.

Like the G7, the G85 has a 16.0-MP Live MOS sensor in the Micro Four Thirds format with an ISO range of 200-25,600. It can be extended lower to 100.

Just when most rumor sites had written off a new Canon mirrorless camera for this year, here comes the Canon EOS M5, plus a new kit lens.

Canon took a different approach with the M5’s styling – integrating an electronic viewfinder (EVF) into the body. That is, it’s not a separate accessory.

Visually, the camera looks to be a mix of its digital SLRs and its G5X, offering a more traditional look.

Fujifilm’s newest X-series X-A3 camera shows off its fun side with three colors – silver, brown and pink. On the inside, there is enough to satisfy the target market for this camera, as well as serious users.

This interchangeable-lens camera features an APS-C 24.2-MP CMOS sensor, which has a sensitivity of ISO 100-6,400. That can be extended upward to 25,600.

The camera uses Fujifilm’s X-mount, which includes a sizable number of lenses.

Fujifilm has issued another firmware update for its X-Pro2 camera, improving autofocus and providing compatibility with its new new electronic flash.

Meanwhile, the company also updates its XF lens roadmap.

Fujifilm is replacing another of its X-series models, and the improvements in the latest camers should allow for faster shooting.

The Fujifilm X-T2 ups the pixel count, replacing the X-T1’s 16.3-MP X-Trans CMOS II sensor with the 24.3-MP X-Trans III CMOS sensor. Like the previous model and other X-series interchangeable-lens cameras, this uses an APS-C sensor.

The sensor’s ISO range is 200-12,800 and can be extended lower to 100 and upward to 51,200.

Canon offers a unique macro lens for its EOS M system

Canon is showing further commitment to the mirrorless concept with the release of a macro lens for its EOS M system.

The Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens has a very unique feature: two built-in mini-electronic lights (Macro Lites) that sit on either side of the front element.

The 28mm lens, which gives a full-frame equivalent 45mm field of view, is made up of 11 elements in 10 groups, including two aspherical elements.

Leica firmware update improves SL's focusing, image quality, other items

Leica has issued an update for its SL mirrorless system, bring a large number of improvements in focusing, exposure and image quality.

The update, tagged v2.0, improves the focusing speed of the body when SL lenses are being used. Leica says focusing accuracy and subject tracking also have been improved.

The update increases the number of AF focusing points when shooting in single-point AF.

Panasonic drops low-pass filter for Lumix GX85, add high-speed shooting

Pansonic’s new interchangeable lens Lumix GX85 drops the low-pass filter to improve image detail.

The new model, which is available in black and silver, will cost less than the GX8 at US$799.99 with a 12-32mm kit lens compared with the GX8 (body only), which has been lowered US$200 to US$999.99.
