The Nikon 1 line of cameras appealed to novice photographers with some of the later models introducing a few features to broaden its appeal, but the one-inch sensor was clearly a limiting factor in broadening its appeal among enthusiasts.

Phase One has announced what is the ultimate digital camera – for now, regardless of the format.

The Phase One XF 100MP comes in several configurations with the top model using the IQ3 100-MP back, which is equipped with a 100-MP CMOS sensor. The back has an integrated 3.2-inch LCD display that Phase One says can be viewed outdoors.

Ricoh marks 10 years of the digital GR with a special kit

Ricoh's digital GR camera was introduced in 2005, answering the demands of those who used the film version.

To mark the occasion, Ricoh has released a special kit.

The US$1,299.95 package includes all of the accessories for the GR II and a few other items. The regular GR II retails for $699.95. 

Sony A68 boasts 4D focusing

Sony continues to build out the lower end of its A-mount DSLR camera line with the addition of the A68.

Like its other recent cameras, the A68 uses a fixed translucent mirror paired with an OLED viewfinder. The non-swinging mirror should give it the ability to take photos at a higher rate. Sony claims up to eight frames per second.

Update: Konost FF development continues

Konost, the company that is developing a full-frame digital rangefinder, hasn’t given up.

In a brief post on its website, Konost says it is committed to producing the Konost FF.

Konost acknowledged that it hasn’t provided any news about the camera, however, it says it has doubled the size of its staff.

Smartphones have become the camera of choice for many people, although there are certain shortcomings with phone cameras.

West Coast startup Light (https://light.co) has announced a new camera that leans heavily on the smartphone size and shape but brings a very novel approach to digital photography.

Sigma dp0 Quattro to ship in late July – US$999

Sigma's dp0 Quattro camera that it announced in March will be available in the U.S. in late July for the street price of $999.

This is the fourth camera in the Quattro series and has a fixed f/4.0 14mm lens (21mm full-frame equivalent) and uses Sigma's Foveon sensor. With this camera, it's a three-layer 29-MP sensor.

Leica Q: Full-frame sensor and a Summilux

If you've lusted after Sony's RX1 camera with its full-frame sensor and Zeiss 35mm Sonnar but can't find the money in your budget, then this won't make you any happier.

The Leica Q is the first in a series of compact digital cameras, Leica says. The Q has a full-frame sensor and a fixed f/1.7 28mm Summilux ASPH. As you might expect, this is more expensive than your typical digital camera at US$4,250.

The camera features a 24.2-MP CMOS sensor with an ISO range of 100-50,000.
