  • 65X superzoom lens withj full-frame equivalent range of 21-1,365mm
  • 20.3-MP CMOS sensor
  • 4K video with port for an external microphone

Coinciding with the release of the PowerShot SX740 HS, Canon also announced its latest so-called bridge camera, the Canon PowerShot SX70 HS.

Like the SX740 HS, this camera adds just enough new features to keep the product fresh. New to this camera is the ability to record 4K video.

The camera features a 65X superzoom lens that is optically stabilized. It has a full-frame equivalent range of 21-1,365mm with apertures running from f/3.6-6.5. Changing the focal length is accomplished by a toggle-style switch that is mounted on the side of the lens barrel.

The camera captures images via a 20.3-MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor. Photos are processed by Canon’s DIGIC 6 image processor and saved to a single SD memory card. High-capacity and higher-speed memory cards are recommended.

The sensor’s ISO range is 100-3,200 (100-800 when the camera is set to A(utomatic).

Shutter speeds run from 15 seconds to 1/2,000. There is a small pop-up electronic flash.

The camera can shoot as quickly as 10 frames per second with autofocus locked after the first shot and up to 5.7 frames per second with autofocus enabled for every shot.

There is an electronic viewfinder, as well as a 3.0-inch LCD monitor for capturing and reviewing photos and images. The LCD monitor swings out horizontally and rotates 180 degrees, making it useful for shooting from a low angle, as well as recording selfies or shooting videos.

The PowerShot SX70 HS has built-in WiFi, which allows you to use Canon Connect to send images to any smart device. This app also allows for remote control of the camera.

The ability to shoot 4K video is a welcome addition to those who are looking for an advanced point and shoot camera. Importantly, the camera can accept an external microphone for those who want to improve the audio quality of the videos. Clips are limited to 29 minutes, 59 seconds.

It is 5.0 x 3.6 x 4.6 in.ches (127.0 x 90.9 x 116.6mm) and weighs 1.3 pounds (608 grams). The PowerShot SX70 HS is available now for US$549.99.
