Step Two: Thinking about the plan

I had come up with an idea. Now, it was time to put it down on paper.

I spent about a week working on a business plan. I listed my goals - from the mundane to "blue sky."

What did I want to do? And how committed was I?

Let's pause briefly and discuss something important.

If I was going to make this work, I had to approach this as a business and not a hobby. Believe it or not, I learned this very important lesson from a television show.

When you enter a venture as a hobby, you look at it much differently than when you treat it as a business.

Step One: Don't panic!

On Dec. 7, 2011, I was laid off the second time.

I was out in the garage doing some work, when I saw several voicemails. It was the HR department where I worked. At least up until that day.

The call started with, "I don't know if you've heard, but we had to let Larry go this morning."

Larry and I were hired the same day, and it didn't take an idiot to quickly figure out what the next words would be from the HR person.

It was a short call, and I took a few minutes to gather my thoughts.
